FERN CREEK, Ky. (WDRB) -- A crowd of city and school leaders helped developers cut the ribbon Monday on the newly completed South Point Boulevard, which connects Bardstown Road in Fern Creek to Bates Elementary School and, soon, the SouthPointe Commons.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A new low-income housing complex in Okolona is moving forward after Metro Council approved rezoning the 17 acre property Thursday night. In a 16 to 7 vote, it was decided that 8016 Shepherdsville Road will now be rezoned from single-family residential to multi-family residential to allow the complex.

Unity Place Apartments will be a large apartment complex planned on 19 acres at 8016 Shepherdsville Road by Louisville-based Barrister Commercial Group.

After a years-long legal battle, officials gathered Tuesday morning at the SouthPointe Commons site in Fern Creek to break ground on the $80-million, 363,000-square-foot retail and lifestyle center.

South Pointe Commons is a planned 363,000-square-foot shopping center on 45 acres at Gene Snyder Freeway and Bardstown Road.

An appellate court ruling upholding the zoning has cleared the way for a developer to proceed with construction of a long-stymied, huge commercial center in Fern Creek. In 2010, Barrister Commercial Group received approval for a 363,000 square-foot shopping center called South Pointe Commons on about 45 acres just southeast of the Gene Snyder Freeway and Bardstown Road. But a handful of residents had kept the development tied up in Kentucky courts.
